Panasonic SC-BT205 Blu-ray home cinema system
Each speaker comes in three parts and when assembled stands just over a metre high. Build quality is underwhelming – the speakers feel hollow and unsubstantial plus the springclip terminals on the back are fiddly, but from a distance they look attractive enough. Panasonic was one of the first companies to launch an all-in-one Blu-ray home cinema system in the UK with last year’s SC-BT100, a typically feature-rich 3.1-channel bundle with powerful but flawed sound quality and awesome hi-def pictures. Some of these Bavaria professionals work entirely on their own, while others work with subcontractors to get the job done. The two front speakers, which come with a new top mounted speaker design that Panasonic claims expands the listening area, are constructed with rigid, low-density bamboo cones. Panasonic has also provided a Kelton-type subwoofer for deep, reverberating bass. Also featured in the system is Panasonic’s 96-kHz Surround Re-master function to enhance the sound quality of CDs and other sources and raise the quality of the multi-channel audio data on Blu-ray Discs and DVDs to produce highly realistic sounds. We’re impressed by the amount of power on tap , which allows the front and centre speakers to get nice and loud while maintaining an element of control. And although the subwoofer’s bass output is satisfyingly fulsome, it can get a bit boomy at loud volumes so it pays to keep the level set fairly low if you don’t want it to overpower the other speakers.

But unless you're a wiring and surround-sound guru, figuring out the technical issues can get a little messy. With Peter Jackson’s ”The Frighteners” DVD in the tray, we were pleased by the quality of the unit’s upscaling, making this visually complex movie look terrific thanks to its accurate, focused detail and natural colour reproduction. As with most of its products, Panasonic packs the SC-BT100 with more features than you can shake a stick at, which on paper makes it look like good value for money despite its fairly steep price tag. As with other similar systems, they don't feel particularly robust or look too alluring – hey, the subwoofer has a chipboard ‘finish' on the rear – but thankfully they make up for it in terms of sound quality. Using the system is simple thanks to the straightforward onscreen menus, which use a similar design to the BD60 and BD80 players with a few tweaks. Everything is bright, colourful and pared down to the basics so that Blu-ray newbies can find their feet quickly.
High frequencies in ”The Dark Knight’s” Dolby TrueHD track are clean and crisp, and unlike many all-in-ones it manages to avoid making loud bangs and crashes during the car chase scene sound harsh or uncomfortable. Dialogue is competently handled too, giving Batman’s growly tones the requisite clarity. But almost as impressive is the depth and richness of the picture, which gives the movie’s gloomy visuals the cinematic gravitas they deserve, while the perfectly judged colour balance never lets skin tones look anything other than smooth and natural. The system also walks the Silicon Optix HQV tests – diagonal lines are smooth and free from jaggies, the pan across the stadium on the Film Resolution Loss test is composed and flicker-free, while noise reduction is second to none.

The SC-BT205 uses a set-top style control unit, which combines a Blu-ray/DVD/CD player with a 1,000W /470W multichannel digital amplifier, and it doesn’t strive for wafer-thin sexiness – it’s portly and proud. The unit is fitted with Panasonic’s customary mirrored fascia, a bit of glitzy eye-candy that makes up for the flimsy plastic flap below, which covers a set of inputs and a few buttons.
High-quality 5.1-channel sound provides robust bass that fills even large listening spaces, and faithful ambience with fine, truly lifelike acoustic nuances. Sound quality is excellent by one-box standards and pictures are blessed with the same ultra-sharp quality that makes Panasonic’s standalone players so special. When you take this fine performance and extensive feature list into account then that price tag seems fairly reasonable – although at this price we would have expected better build quality and support for DivX HD and WMA. There’s no denying the sheer quality of the SC-BT100, which dazzles with a superb feature list, sublime hi-def picture quality and a satisfying sound performance. On the downside, it’s a shame that it’s not a 5.1 system as standard, as having to fork out for extra wireless speakers and the relevant gear is a bit rich given the already high price. Also, the lack of BD Live as found on the DMP-BD50 is a minor disappointment, but these minor gripes aside this is yet another killer proposition from Panasonic.
With your iPod hooked up you can use the system’s onscreen menus and remote to play your music, videos and photos. While it’s not the most jaw-dropping system we’ve ever seen, its mirrored fascia injects a touch of high-tech bling and the black finish elsewhere is tasteful enough. What’s less forgivable though is the hollow, plasticky build quality of the main unit and speakers, which is not what you expect at this price.
These front-mounted sockets include an SD card slot, a USB port, an input for the supplied setup microphone and a headphones jack, and you’ll also find a source select button and a pair of buttons for radio tuning and chapter skipping. But the most compelling feature on the front is a hidden iPod dock, which can be pulled out when required. With an iPod attached, you can browse lists onscreen as well as view videos and photos. In addition to these advanced functions, Panasonic took the environment into full consideration in designing the SC-BTX70. It is Energy Star qualified, and its UniPhier LSI integrates all video signal processing circuits onto a single chip, which lowers power consumption and reduces the number of components.
Top it all with fine usability – it's a machine that has an auto-set-up with a calibration mic – with the result that you have the ideal all-in-one introduction to Blu-ray surround sound. Playing zombie slasher Dead Snow, the SC-BT205 sets itself apart from its rivals. The level of insight with both audio and video is a step above its rivals, the system producing a poised, balanced sound capable of punch and subtlety. Despite its modest appearance, that sub delivers chunky, fulsome bass – in fact, you’ll need to dial it down from the default settings to give the other speakers a chance to be heard such is its overbearing presence.
